I'm not trying to be argumentative here - it's just that I don't really see this as specifically an OS problem, or least not a problem that couldn't be fixed. Cornice Portable is an image viewer packaged as a portable app. MyPaint is a nimble, distraction-free, and easy tool for digital painters. IcoFX is an award winning freeware icon editor. So why can't we have a non-installer Windows version? GIMP Portable is the popular GIMP for Windows image editor packaged as a portable app.

exe that fires up the Windows installer? Is there something in OOo that really, really needs to have admin priv to work? Or is it, as I suspect, just the installation process? I think it must be possible to do this - the portable version I've been using works just fine (apart from the drawing problem I mentioned) and if it's missing features that had to be torn out to make it work without admin rights, I don't know what they are and they're obviously nothing I can't live without (since if I needed 'em, I'd know they weren't there). zip download that you can expand where you need it, instead of having to download an. This software package is constantly updated free of charge. It would be nice if I could always get the latest version and unpack it without requiring admin rights, which is one reason I was asking if it's possible. We recommend LibreOffice, because this is the successor to OpenOffice. So I can use the portable version, but in general they tend to lag behind the latest release by quite a bit. The doc I'm working on right now is for work, so I have no need or desire to take it home, and even if I did I would take it as an ODT file (I have 3.2 on my home desktop, and you won't find any MSOffice stuff on there). But thanks to OOo, I can generally avoid that POS and with file format support improving in OOo it gets better as time goes on. I don't use MSWord unless I really, really have to - it gets clunkier and harder to use with every version that comes out, but it's the 'official' in-house WP so we're kinda stuck with it. If I need to hand off a doc to someone else I save as MSWord format and send that, or alternatively export as a PDF. I write docs at work with OOWriter (the portable version, of course), and I always keep them as.
